Kenneth Robin Hinkle

Kenneth Robin Hinkle, 79, of Bridgewater, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 10, 2017.

He was born on May 28, 1937 in Old Fields, W.Va. to Forrest W. and Arbutus E. (Clayton) Hinkle. Ken attended Potomac State and West Virginia University, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Geology. He served in the United States Army from 1961-1964. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Ken married his beloved wife of 52 years, Cora Goldizen, of Cabins, WV on September 4,1964. In addition to his wife, Ken is survived by a daughter, Candy H. Martin and her husband Mark.

Ken was a member of the Bridgewater United Methodist Church where he was actively involved in many areas of the church. He taught Sunday School, was a member of the Bridgewater United Methodist Men’s Club and served as the church historian.

Ken worked as a Ground Water Specialist with the State Water Control Board from 1968 until July 2000, when he retired. Ken enjoyed the outdoors and nature. He collected rocks, fossils and minerals, and loved to study land and water formations. He was an avid bird watcher and had collected more than 100 different species on his “lifetime sightings” bird list. He was a member of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Bird Club where he served as president for ten years and edited the “Goldfinch Gazette” for twenty years. Ken also loved history of all kinds. He especially enjoyed genealogy and was a long time member of the Rev. Anthony Jacob Henckel Family Association, Inc., where he served as president for fourteen years and most recently as Historian. Ken loved books and had collected hundreds of them. He also enjoyed traveling and had visited almost every state as well as some international destinations. A highlight of his travels was a trip to the Galapagos Islands.

A memorial service was held at the Bridgewater United Methodist Church on Friday, April 21, 2017 with Rev. Jim Harris and Pastor Troy Pearson officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Bridgewater United Methodist Church or to the Bridgewater Rescue Squad.
