William Snowden “Bill” Alt, Sr.

William Snowden “Bill” Alt, Sr.,  age 91,  of Petersburg, W.Va. passed away on Friday, November 4, 2016 at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

He was born May 24, 1925 in Landes, W.Va. and was the son of the late James Franklin Alt  and Stella (Alt)  Alt.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Orville Alt, Junior Alt, Kermit Alt, Charles P. Alt, Paul Alt, Roger L. Alt and an infant brother and two sisters, Myrtle Berg and Vada Evick. 

Mr. Alt was a lifelong timberman and farmer. He served as Deputy Sheriff for Grant County in the early 70’s.  He was a member of the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company for several years. He was an avid gardener.  He was a member of the Memorial Church of the Brethren in Petersburg. 

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirelene (Thorne) Alt; two sons, William Snowden “Billy” Alt, Jr. and wife Leslie of Moorefield, W.Va. and Larry W. “Mouse” Alt of Petersburg, W.Va.; two daughters,  Tammy Harper and husband Mark of Petersburg, W.Va. and Pammy Mitchell and husband Greg  of Upper Tract, W.Va.; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two additional daughters, Louanna Reynolds and husband Phil of North Carolina and Kathy Propst and husband Robert  of Franklin, W.Va.; two sisters, Martha Evans and Audrey Blosser of Richmond, VA and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 7, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Harold Cullers, Rev. Greg Rotruck and Rev. Brad Taylor officiating.  Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Petersburg, W.Va.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.  

Arrangements were under direction of Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, W.Va.
