Four Reclining Chairs

I have four reclining chairs. I use three of them regularly.

Newest is in Moorefield. I spend lots of time in it these days. It’s sort of a retirement gift to myself. It leaves me close to work I’m not going to do any more. It keeps me handy for my wife and kids in case there is something I can still do for them. I sleep in it nights when I’m in Moorefield.

I go to sleep over whatever I’m reading or computing on my laptop. I wake enough to take off my shoes, turn off the reading light over my head and then fall back asleep. As I’ve aged, I’ve worn a path through furniture between recliner and bathroom door. Mornings, I wake, put on my shoes, stand up, and go out to check the weather.
Day times, when in Moorefield, but not at the Examiner office, there’s a good chance I’m in that recliner. That’s where staff finds me when trucks requiring my forklift expertise need to be unloaded. That’s where Phoebe finds me when she needs her groceries unloaded.

Second recliner is at Big House, my old home place near Wardensville. It sits in the dining room where Pap’s old chair sat. A large chunk of his resting life was spent at that location. He’d get up from the supper table and move to his recliner. I replaced that old recliner with the one I moved from Moorefield.

When he didn’t have veterinary farm calls, Pap sat there after supper cracking nuts or peeling an orange into a newspaper on his lap. He’d watch whatever small snowy television he had handy. He’d fall asleep over news, weather forecast, and musical entertainment shows. Lawrence Welk, Donna Fargo, and Porter Waggoner were among his favorites. Occasionally he’d doze off with a lit cigarette between his fingers.

Pap might sleep there a couple hours before waking to go up to bed. Winter times he’d stoke up the fire near his feet and head up the outside steps. Lambing season he’d usually take a quick trip to the barn before bed. As we got older he’d mumble “Come get me if you need me” on his way up the stairs.

Third recliner is at Doghouse, my cabin on the bank of Moore’s Run. It sits beside a window about twenty feet from the creek. Doghouse is my bedroom when I’m at Wardensville and that recliner is my bed. I went to sleep there last night listening to rapids gurgling beside me.

First Doghouse recliner was Pap’s old one from Big House. I slept in it for at least fifteen years until it got too dilapidated. When I hauled it to Petersburg Transfer Station it still had Mom’s patches over burn holes from Pap’s cigarettes. At Doghouse, it also had Pap’s old dining room wood stove to keep it company.

I hauled that chair away when I bought a newer one from my son, James. He was downsizing his furniture investment and I bought two recliners from him. One went to Doghouse where I slept in it last night. The other found a new location in Big House.

It’s upstairs above Big House’s kitchen beside a window where Mom and Pap had their bed. I rearranged their old room, put the chair where their bed used to be. Now, if Pap comes back he can take his choice, old double bed or his grandson’s recliner.
