James Reid Homan

James Reid Homan, age 92 of Sugar Grove, W.Va., passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Sentara RMH in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was born on September 18, 1924, in Sugar Grove, and was the son of the late Dr. Virgil Ray Homan, Sr., and Leafy A. Mitchell Homan.

Mr. Homan graduated from Franklin High School in 1943. Better known as Uncle Reid to his family, he remained in Sugar Grove after graduation and devoted his life to running the family farms in West Virginia and Virginia, raising sheep, hogs, cattle, and crops amongst many other responsibilities.

Reid was a charter member of the Sugar Grove Lions Club, a past member of the Virginia and West Virginia Farm Bureau, and member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church. He was president of the Sugar Grove Cemetery Association for many years.

Surviving are two brothers, Virgil Ray Homan, Jr., and wife, Jeanne, of Sugar Grove, W.Va., and John Franklin Homan, and wife, Loretta of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Jean Ann Homan, of Franklin, W.Va.; five nephews and seven nieces, Morris Mitchell Homan, Jr., Anne Homan DePoy, Amy Homan DePoy, Mary Carter Homan, Betsy Homan Sheets, Thomas Reid Homan, Kyle Richard Homan, Dale Byrd Homan, Andrew Todd Homan, Jenni Homan Fenton, Julia Ray Homan, Jill Homan Holmes, Susan Jeanette Homan, and Sarah Alice Speck; 20 great nephews and nieces; and a great-great nephew and niece.

He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Morris Mitchell Homan, Sr., Richard Wilson Homan, and Walter Byrd Homan; two nephews, Carl Ray Homan and Gregory Scott Homan; and many close friends.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 30, 2017, in the chapel at Basagic Funeral Home with the Reverend Stanley Kile officiating. Interment was in the Sugar Grove Cemetery, Sugar Grove, W.Va.
