Arthur Lynn Shipe

Arthur Lynn Shipe passed away in Reston, Va. on Friday, August 12, 2016 after a valiant battle with acute leukemia surrounded by his loving and devoted family.

 Arthur Lynn Shipe was born in Mathias, West Virginia on May 3, 1932, the son of the late Arthur William and Lydia Gladys May Shipe. He attended a one-room grade school and Mathias High School from which he graduated in 1950. He graduated from Berea College (Kentucky) in 1954.  From 1954 to 1956 he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany.

 He graduated from Yale Law School in 1959 and was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar that year.  From 1959 to 1974 he was an attorney for the Interstate Commerce Commission and was Assistant Commerce Counsel for the New England Motor Rate Bureau in Massachusetts (1963-1970).
 In 1974 he was appointed a Federal Administrative Law Judge.  In that position he conducted proceedings in 50 cities throughout the United States that were brought by numerous federal agencies.  Parties to these proceedings included many foreign nationals and prominent American firms. 

 He was a member of the Federal Administrative Law Judges Conference and served on its Executive Committee.  He completed classes at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada.  Judge Shipe retired in 2006 but continued as a consultant until his illness in 2015.
 He was a founding and active member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Herndon, VA, formerly in Reston.  He served in various positions including President and Elder and taught Sunday School for many years.  He was trained and served as a Stephen Minister.  He was the church Legal Trustee for over 30 years.

He was a volunteer for OAR, a prisoner rehabilitation program.

On September 15, 1956, he married Gerda Elisabeth Heller, whom he met during his service in Germany.  She passed away in February 2011.  He is survived by their three daughters, Kimberly Shipe, Karen Coble (Michael) and Kelly Dettra (Chip), seven grandchildren, Emily, Ryan and Jordan Wicht, Katie, Sophia, and Matthew Coble and Emma Dettra, as well as his brother, Freel.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph.

 The family requests that donations be made in his name to Food for the Poor, 6401 Lyons Rd., Coconut Creek, FL 33073, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or the Hardy County Community Foundation (P.O. Box 1058, Moorefield, W.Va. 26836).

 A Memorial Service will be Saturday August 27, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1133 Reston Ave., Herndon Va. 20170. Family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Burial will be held Saturday August 20, 2016 11:00 AM at the St. John’s / Lowery Cemetery near Mathias W.Va., the family will meet at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway Va. at 10:00 AM to go to the cemetery.

 The family will receive friends Friday August 19, 2016 from 6-8 PM at the Grandle Funeral Home, 148 E. Lee St., Broadway, VA 22815.
