Bertha “Betty” Lynn Wilson, age 81, of Petersburg went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 15, 2016 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She passed peacefully at her home surrounded by her family as the sun set on a beautiful day.
She was born and raised in Petersburg, West Virginia and graduated from Petersburg High School, Class of 1953. She attended Potomac State College and graduated from West Virginia University in June 1957 with a BS in Home Economics. Betty was a WVU Extension Agent in Tyler County, Dietitian at Grant Memorial Hospital, Teachers Aide and Substitute at Petersburg High School and Secretary/Accountant at L&W Enterprises, Inc.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Leon J. Wilson, her parents, Charles Neil and Mary Opal (Cross) Hill and one brother, Robert V. Hill.
She is survived by two sons, Leon Hunter and wife Lauren (Poisal) Wilson, Charles Kirk and wife Laura Jean (Smith) Wilson, three grandsons, Patrick Hunter Wilson, Charles Derek Wilson and Jonathan Carl Wilson, one brother, Charles William “Bill” and wife Nancy (Wilson) Hill and six nieces and nephews and their families.
She was a lifelong member of the Main Street Methodist Church where she served in many ways. She was a 50-year member of the Petersburg Chapter #146 Order of the Eastern Star and member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America Court No.1 Wheeling, WV and Potomac Highlands Ladies Shrine Club. She caringly touched the lives of many, was loved and respected by most and was most happy when serving others.
Hunter and Kirk would like to thank Mom’s Caregivers, Emma Bland, Helen Clark, Laura Wilson and Grant County Hospice for their loving kindness and care during her last months.
The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 PM on Thursday, October 20 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. The Eastern Star will conduct services at the funeral home Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held at the Main Street Methodist Church on Saturday October 22nd at 1 p.m. with Rev. Nathan Epling and Rev. Craig Howard officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Shriners Hospital for Childern, 3551 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA. 19140.
