Shirley was born in Moorfield, W.Va. and at the age of 9 moved with her family to California, where they lived for six years. It was no secret that Shirley did not care for life in California, and with her father’s blessing and support, at 15 years of age she rode the train (unaccompanied) back to her beloved West Virginia. She soon met Jim and they married in 1954 and started their family with the arrival of Diann. They were a family of 3 for 20 years when Jamie arrived. All the while, Shirley cherished taking care of her husband and girls and devoted all her energies to that endeavor. As the girls married and had children of their own, family gatherings were regular occurrences at the Heavener’s. Shirley loved hosting Sunday dinners, cookouts and any other reason she could come up with to have everybody over. Shirley’s veneer, to many, was quite serious and could be seen as stern (and she could be both!), however, under that was a very clever and wonderful sense of humor that was always at the ready.
She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Wappocoma Post 1101, Romney and was a 40 year member of Weight Watchers “Golden Girls.”
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney Interment followed at Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, W.Va.
